Tri-City Baptist Church Cut-A-Thon
HICKORY – Area kids were getting some free haircuts at Beyond Appearance in Union Square on Friday in time for school next week.
The haircuts were part of a “cut-a-thon” that Trinity Baptist Church was participating in on Friday. Recently, there was a bookbag giveaway along with coupons for free haircuts. This was the third year of the event.
John Lail, 6, was one of the kids getting his curls trimmed off. Getting ready to start first grade at Shuford Elementary, when the haircut was done, he leaped out of the chair and started picking the hair back up. Lail said that when he grows up, he wants to be “Turtle Boy.” His mother Robin Lail of Conover explained why.
“He has an aquarium with little snapping turtles about the size of a quarter,” Lail said.
His mother said she learned about the program through a friend who attends the church.
“It’s a really great program they have,” Lail said. “It helps a lot.”
Cheyenne Alls was having her hair layered on Friday. Alls will start kindergarten at Lyle Creek Elementary next week and will turn 5 on Monday.
Cheyenne’s mother, Deanna Alls, said her daughter can’t wait to start school.
“She’s excited even more than I am,” Alls said. “I think she’s more excited because she gets to ride the school bus.”
Alls said it was the first time she’d ever been to Union Square.
Salon owner Krystal Travis said there had been nearly 100 kids who had their hair cut on Friday.
